Wealth Managers Bet Big on Hong Kong Amid Mainland Money Influx

Hong Kong is witnessing a surge in wealth management activity as global banks and private wealth firms ramp up hiring to cater to a rising influx of mainland Chinese money. Institutions like UBS Group, Julius Baer, and Bank of Singapore are expanding their Hong Kong operations, targeting both ultra-high-net-worth individuals and the modestly wealthy with assets between $5 million and $10 million. This renewed momentum comes after years of political unrest, strict COVID measures, and economic challenges that led to a population exodus. Policies such as tax incentives and residency plans for significant investments have successfully attracted Chinese clients seeking offshore diversification amid domestic economic slowdown and geopolitical uncertainty. The push has revitalized Hong Kongโ€™s financial sector, with licensed finance jobs hitting record highs and private wealth net inflows tripling to $44 billion in 2023. As Chinese capital controls tighten, clients increasingly turn to Hong Kong for accessible, diversified investment options.

โ€œWeโ€™re strategically expanding our team in Hong Kong by hiring new client advisers and team heads."
