Global ETF Flows Hit Record $1.5T, Driven by U.S. Markets and AI buzz

Global ETF flows soared to a record $1.5 trillion in 2024, fueled by surging equity and fixed-income investments and bolstered by Donald Trump’s re-election in November. Total ETF assets reached $13.8 trillion, reflecting a growing shift away from mutual funds toward ETFs for their cost efficiency, transparency, and tax benefits, particularly in the U.S. Actively managed ETFs also gained momentum, surpassing $1 trillion in assets for the first time, with net flows more than doubling from the previous year. Globally, the U.S. dominated flows, with South Korea, Ireland, and other international markets also experiencing record growth. Notably, just three S&P 500 ETFs captured nearly 20% of global inflows, highlighting the increasing concentration within the industry. While tech-focused funds saw massive inflows amid AI enthusiasm, defensive sectors like healthcare and emerging market bond ETFs faced significant outflows.

"Inflation-adjusted returns on short-term bond products, especially for US investors, are back to where they were before rates started rising."
